Carl Del Pizzo, 1922

Carl Del Pizzo,

This website includes a picture of the 1922 second grade class at Holy Name Parish on Broadway on the southeast side of Cleveland. My mother was in that class and identified most of the children in the picture. She identified the fourth student from our right in the third row as Carl Del Pizzo. There was a Carl Del Pizzo living in the area who is most likely him.

Carl Del Pizzo was born May 10, 1914, possibly in Bedford, Ohio,1 the son of Joseph and Angela (Schieda) Del Pizzo. In 1930 he and his family were living at 4848 East 86th Street, Garfield Heights. In the home, besides Carl, were his brothers Michael, Anthony, Louis, Charles, John and Raymond. His younger sister Anna was with them also; his older sister Maria had married in 1928. The family remained at that address, Carl's father dying there in 1956, and his mother being described as formerly of that address when she died in 1961.

Carl, on October 26, 1940, married Louise Del Priore, in Cleveland, apparently at Holy Name Church. I don't know if they had children. Carl died in Parma, on April 14, 1989, and his wife died in 1998. They are both buried in All Saints Cemetery, Northfield.

The Del Pizzos

I didn't find as much information on this family as I have for most of the other second grade students. I don't know if it was because of the inconsistencies in spelling the family name, incomplete censuses, bad transcriptions and indexing or what.

I can tell you that Carl's father Joseph/Giuseppe Del Pizzo was born about 1880 in Italy, arrived in the United States about 1903, and died about December 22, 1956. His naturalization records, July 1, 1926, in US District Court, Cleveland, should include an exact date and place of birth, along with a more specific arrival date. His death record should provide his parents' names. With that information, a person ought to be able to find his town of origin in Italy.

The Schiedas

Carl's mother, Angela Schieda, was also born about 1880 in Italy and said she arrived in the US in 1908. Her husband's naturalization records might include an exact date and place for her also. Her death record, September 3, 1961, in Cleveland, should identify her parents. That would go a long way toward finding her town of origin.

Angela's death notice said she was the sister of "Lucia, Donata, and Rosaria, all of Italy." There are birth records indexed on in Civitaluparella, Chieti, Abruzzo, Italia, for Angela, Rosa, Donata, and Rocco Del Pizzo, born between 1879 and 1888. I don't know if that is the right family or not. Again, Angela's death certificate would help.

I found so little information on this family that I almost didn't write up this article, but I didn't want to leave Carl Del Pizzo out of the collection of students in the picture. Sources and a few more details are in the Ohio Families section of this website.

^1. In Bedford, according to his marriage record.

Most of the information here is about my family or my wife’s, or about families with ties to Cleveland, Ohio, or the area near Rostrevor and Kilkeel in County Down, Ireland. There are also some unrelated families included that I came across. Whatever the case, I hope the material is helpful in your own efforts.
