He married Mary Johnston Clarke in Richmond on 4 December 1862. They had at least seven children: Thomas Elton, William Dudley, Myrtle, Anna, Alice, Mary W. and John C. He enlisted as a Private in Company "I", 1st Virginia Infantry on 21 April 1861. He was discharged in August 1861 after furnishing a substitute. He died age 31 of "Phthisis Pulmonalis," per Cemetery records, though marriage and Census records suggest a birth year of 1841. He is buried near his parents in the plot he co-owned with George F.
