Narrative
Said to be the father of Francis Colgan:
"[Bernard] was the son of Francis Colgan who is buried in the St Coleman church graveyard. Francis was from Ballymaderphy. Bernard Colgan's grandfather was Edward Colgan of Aghyoghill [may refer to Ahoghill Ballymena, Antrim, but uncertain --ECH]. Edward Colgan was a weaver by trade and apparently was listed among the flax growers of 1796.
. . . [W]e know little else of Edward Colgan. He apparently had 2 sons Francis (mentioned above) and Patrick of Lisnacree. We know nothing of parents, siblings or spouse of Edward. We believe the family came to Down from the Inishowen peninsula in north Donegal sometime in the 18th century." See "Colgan family Kilkeel County Down", posted by Peter Colgan on Jan 7, 2005, on the rootsweb.com County Down/General Message Board.

Said also to be the father of Patrick Colgan:
"Patrick and Catherine (Fitzpatrick) Colgan, of Lisnacree, in that county, who were the children of Edward Colgan, of Aughioguhill, and Denis Fitzpatrick, of Ballymacdurphy, of Down county, the former a weaver, and the latter a farmer and blacksmith." See the biographical sketch of John A Colgan in Documents and biography pertaining to the settlement and progress of Stark County, Illinois, published by M.A. Leeson & Co., Chicago, 1887. [Note: I don't know whether Edward was the father of Patrick or of Francis or if the family did come from Inishowen or Antrim. --ECH]
