No One Injured In Plane Crash At Winterport
WINTERPORT, Maine (AP) The two occupants of a single-engine seaplane escaped unharmed after the plane crashed into the Penobscot River when its engine stalled. Officials said the craft, which was involved in the search for a body, crashed into Bald Cove on the Penobscot near here Sunday. The pilot, Sherwood Chaison, 51, of Bangor and Max Knowlton of Hermon were picked up by fisherman shortly after the crash. Both men are Penobscot County deputy sheriffs and were searching the river for the body of Wayne Stantial, 21, of Bucksport. Stantial was reported missing and presumed drowned after a canoeing accident on the Penobscot at Bangor last week.
Chaison, who owns the craft reportedly was making a banked turn about 30 feet above Bald Cove the river when the engine stalled. The plane was badly damaged and removed from the river by a crane.
