Family of Henry G. Kiel and Sarah Kern

Sarah Kern was born 1805 in York County, Pennsylvania, married Henry Kiel in Greensburg, PA, in 1824, and died, probably in Johnstown, between 1864 and 1867. This picture came from a third cousin:

Sally (Kern) Kiel

Sally (Kern) Kiel

This might also be of Sarah “Sally” Kiel. It is a photocopy of a tintype. The original was in a two panel picture frame that belonged to her daughter Elizabeth “Eckie” (Kiel) Hamilton. The other panel held a photo of Eckie’s husband Joseph. I don’t know anyone else whose picture Eckie would have kept from that era:

Possibly Sarah Kern Kiel

This picture is of the Kiel’s second child, Mary Ann (Kiel) Snider. Her date of death is written in the top margin:

Mary Ann Kiel Snider

And this picture was identified as Mary Ann in Frank Kiel’s book, Hendrik Gerrit Kiel, Dutch Immigrant to Pennsylvania:

Mary Ann’s husband, Jacob Snider, was born in Germany and lived most of his life in the Waynesboro, PA, area, where he was a member of the Dunkards, a shoemaker, and father of twelve:

This picture was called “maryannkiel14.jpg” when I received it. But Mary Ann was born in 1828 and I don’t think they had this type of photograph in 1842. It might be one of her daughters:

possibly a daughter of Mary Ann (Kiel) Snider

The Kiel’s third child was Jacob Kiel. This picture was evidently identified by his nephew Thomas Hamilton, who typed in “Uncle Jake Kiel”. It comes from one of Tom’s descendants. Jacob lived on Route 53 in Portage, Pennsylvania, according to Frank Kiel’s book, Hendrik Gerrit Kiel, Dutch Immigrant to Pennsylvania:

The Kiel’s fourth child, Daniel Morris Kiel, from late in life. Possibly at his daughter’s in Mt. Union, Pennsylvania:

The man in this next picture looks so much like Morris Kiel that I am going to include it in this collection even though it was unidentified. It was with his sister Eckie’s belongings and came to me with a date of 1891. Let’s say it is “likely” Daniel Morris Kiel:

Likely Daniel Morris Kiel, 1891

Likely Daniel Morris Kiel, 1891

Frank Kiel’s book says that the back of this photo said “1912″. On the left is Mary Ann Snider, on the far right is Celia Clossin. Next to Celia is most likely Emma Spielman. The woman standing in back is unidentified:

Mary Ann Snider, Celia Clossin and Emma Spielman, 1912

These next photos came to me as a set from one of Thomas Hamilton’s grand-daughters. Tom’s mother was Elizabeth Eckstine “Eckie” Kiel. The bottom left photo has a handwritten note that says “Mrs. Hamilton”, so that would be Eckie. The bottom right, unidentified, is probably Tom’s mother, Eckie, as well.

The two women in the top photo are identified as Aunt Dollie and Aunt Marnie, so they are Eckie's sisters. Marnie can be a nickname for Margaret, so the woman on the right is most likely the Kiel's oldest daughter, Margaret (Kiel) Young. Aunt Dollie then could only be Sarah (Kiel) Gibbons, since we have identified the other sisters above in the earlier photographs and this woman doesn't look like any of them. Sarah and Margaret's families spent most of their lives in Dubuque, Iowa. Perhaps this picture of the two of them was taken and sent back to the sisters in Pittsburgh:

Here are two photos from my great-grandmother Eckie Hamilton's belongings. Tne first is of her sister Margaret Young. The second is signed "Maymie". It is probably Margaret's daughter Mary E (Young) O'Regan. They were both living in Toronto in 1908, when these were taken:

Margaret (Kiel) Young, 1908

Margaret (Kiel) Young, 1908

likely Mary (Young) O'Regan, 1908

likely Mary (Young) O'Regan, 1908

This next photo--also taken in Toronto--was with the previous two, so it could be one of Louis Stewart. Margaret and Mary lived with Louis for quite a number of years in Toronto. The censuses all say that Louis was a nephew of Margaret and a cousin to Mary O'Regan, but I haven't figured out yet exactly how he was related:
maybe Louis Stewart, 1908

maybe Louis Stewart, 1908

And I suspect that this next photo is of Margaret Young and her daughter, Mary O'Regan, but taken in Iowa. They moved to Toronto between 1880 and 1891:

Family of James D Hamilton and Mary Ann Crum

Taken in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, with James D Hamilton on the far left and his son Joseph on the far right. The date under the events is Friday August 30. The ages of the Wallace Sisters on the 1870 census of New York City are Jennie, 16, Minnie 9, and Maude, 7.  Jennie (Wallace) Dobson is on the 1880 census of Matawan, NJ, with a two year old son.  I found something online that said the Wallace Sisters began touring in 1869. So I think we can narrow the year of the picture down to 1872.

Emma (Hamilton) McClelland was the youngest daughter of James D and Mary (Crum) Hamilton. This is a photograph of Emma and her husband Thomas McClelland:

The first two sons of Thomas and Emma McClelland were James "Jay", born February 1889, and George, born October 1891. This picture looks like it was taken shortly after George's birth:

These pictures of Joseph and Eckie were taken in Pittsburgh. They are hard to date, other than sometime between 1889, when they arrived in Pittsburgh, and 1898 when Joseph died:

Joseph and Eckie had six children but only the three boys survived childhood: James, Henry (or Harry), and Thomas. Here are Tom and Harry as youngsters--as choir boys it looks like. I imagine this was taken in Pittsburgh, since Harry is about the same age as the picture that follows, which was taken by a photographer in Allegheny City:
Tom and Harry Hamilton

Tom and Harry Hamilton

I'm guessing that Harry is about 12 years old at the most in this next picture. He was born in March 1882, so the picture was taken about 1894 or so:
Harry Hamilton, about 1894

Harry Hamilton, about 1894

Harry, or "Hadd" as he was known, looks a bit less than 20 in this picture:
Harry Hamilton, about 1902

And another of Harry, a bit older, but still before his marriage, I would say:
Harry Hadd Hamilton, about 1910?

Harry Hadd Hamilton, about 1910?

Although the typewritten caption of this next photograph says "James Hamilton and Jane Anne Billups", if you look closely at the handwritten caption, it says "Hadd and Anna". I'm sure it isn't my grandparents, James and Jane Hamilton, so it must be Hadd and Anna on their wedding day. They were married sometime before 1920:

Harry was a typesetter for a newspaper most of his life, working for the Pittsburgh Post and Sun, then for 29 years at the Cleveland Press. He retired from the Press in 1950, so this picture taken in 1947 was most likely taken at the Press also. It looks like he enjoyed his work.

This next picture was also in the set from my second cousin. The adults are Anna and Harry "Hadd" Hamilton. The young man in the center was identified as "Morris". Could it be Hadd's nephew James Morris Hamilton, who was born in 1899. Or is he a relative of Anna?

Joseph and Eckie's youngest son, Thomas Earl, was born in January 1885, so maybe this picture was taken about 1905 to 1910:
Thomas Earl Hamilton, about 1905 to 1910?

Thomas Earl Hamilton, about 1905 to 1910?

I'm not sure if this is Tom and Ethel (Scott) Hamilton's wedding picture or not. I'm guessing that it isn't but the ages are about right. Tom was born in 1885 and Ethel in 1888. They were married on August 1, 1913:

Family of James Hamilton and Jane Billups

This might be Jane Billups' mother, Agnes Gratton, but I can't say for sure. It was with the Billups' papers and could be Agnes as a young woman. She was born in 1845:
possibly Agnes Gratton

possibly Agnes Gratton

This came with a date of 1895, so Jane Billups would have been twenty-one. She was married to James Morris Hamilton the following year:

These two pictures were together when I received them from a second cousin. On the left is James and Jane Hamilton's son Louis K Hamilton, who was born in November 1897. On the right is one of James Hamilton probably taken before he was married (June 1896):

James and Jane (Billups) Hamilton's first son, Louis Kiel Hamilton, was born November 18, 1897. This could be a christening picture:

The Hamilton lived on 38th Street in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh. Here is one of all four sons in front of their home. From left to right: Barrett Earl, Louis Kiel, Charles Elmer, and James Morris. Charles, the youngest, was born in December 1903, so this might have been taken in early 1906:

My sister just recently found this one of Barrett by himself, taken a few years later, probably also on 38th Street:

James and Jane's son Charles married Lucy O'Rourke in Cleveland on May 29, 1947. I'm not sure exactly where in Cleveland this was taken. If I had to guess, it would be at Lucy's sister Ellen's home.
