Michael's son James Hammond's death record says Michael was born in Co. Antrim, Ireland. Michael's son Thomas's death record says that Michael Hammond was born in Sligo. His daughter Margaret McClelland's record just says Ireland. I haven't looked for the other children's deaths.

I would bet on James' record being correct, namely that Michael was born in Co. Antrim. . It is more likely that the Scots were moving west in Ireland in the 1820's than for someone to make up a completely different, and incorrect, birthplace for their grandfather. And there is some talk in online genealogy forums about a Culkin family who moved from Rathlin Island, Antrim, to Dromore West, County Sligo Ireland around 1820 as well.

All Michael's sons emigrated to Bolivar, Westmoreland County. Michael Hammond himself came to the US in 1874, after the death of his (third) wife Rebecca Roberts. He first stayed with his eldest daughter Margaret (Mrs. David) McClelland in Johnstown. He did not live long after that, and is buried in West View Cemetery, Bolivar, PA.
