Gwilym D. Davies, D. Ed., 99, of Paxtang, Dauphin County, entered into eternal life at his home on January 14, 2011, with his beloved wife and family at his side. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was born June 22, 1911, in Johnsonburg, Elk County, PA. He was the son of the late Gwilym S. Davies and Elizabeth Smailes Davies and is survived by his wife of 76 years, Dorothy Barnett Davies; they were married in Bradford, McKean County, PA on August 24, 1934.
He was preceded in death by his three brothers Marshall, Gordon and Arden; and, two sisters Juanita and Theodosia.
Dr. Davies served as the Millersburg Area School District Superintendent in the 1950's and was Superintendent of Central Dauphin School District from 1958 until he retired in 1973.
He was an officer in the US Navy during WWII and served on the USS Granville APA 171 as Boat Group Commander in the Pacific Theatre. He was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School and his undergraduate and graduate degrees were earned at The University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Davies served on the Board at HACC. He was also an avid golfer, bowler, was an accomplished poker player and enjoyed playing the organ.
He was a member of Paxton Presbyterian Church, a 33rd degree Mason, member of Perseverance Lodge 21 F&AM, Harrisburg Consistory, the National Sojourners, the Zembo Temple, Tall Cedars of Lebanon and the Welsh Society of Greater Harrisburg.
He is also survived by their six children, Gwilym Davies of San Antonio, Texas; Gordon Davies of Harrisburg; Terry Davies of Ocala, FL.; Rebecca Davies Neff of Gardners; Jerry Davies of Harrisburg, and Dorothy Davies Nichter of Harrisburg. They have six grandchildren: Allyson Davies Chenery of Gainesville, FL; Rachel Neff Craven of Mt Holly Springs; Jared Robert Neff of Mechanicsburg; Aaron Thomas Neff of Wheaton, IL; Dorothy Patricia Nichter and Thomas Joseph Nichter, Jr. of Harrisburg and five great-grandchildren.
Services including Masonic Service will be held Friday January 21, 2011, at 11:00 AM, at Paxton Presbyterian Church; a luncheon at the church will follow the services. Internment will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery on Monday January 24th at 1:00PM.
In memory of Dr. Davies, the family requests that a donation be made to either The University of Pittsburgh School of Education "In memory of Dr. Gwilym D. Davies."
