Thomas Jenkinson

Birth Name Thomas Jenkinson
Gender male
Age at Death about 67 years

Narrative

According to the 1841 Census, Thomas Jenkinson was not born in the same county as they were living in, namely Derbyshire, but no details about places of birth were given that year. (Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece 195; Book: 1; Civil Parish: Dronfield; County: Derbyshire; Enumeration District: 4; Folio: 41; Page: 11; Line: 10; GSU roll: 241297.)

Thomas was a hatter and also ran the Green Dragon Inn in Dronfield. (Confirmed by the journal of his nephew Joseph Jenkinson, now at the Derbyshire Record Office. Kathleen M. Battye, Editor, Diary of Joseph Jenkinson of Dronfield, Chesterfield: Derbyshire Record Society, 1987.)

Thomas is listed in the 1835 Pigot's Commercial Directory of Dronfield as both hatter and publican. (Pigot's Commercial Directory of Derbyshire, 1835 Transcribed by Rosemary Lockie, May 1996. at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DBY/Pigot1835/dbydronf.html)

The Green Dragon was still on Church St., Dronfield, in 2007. Parts of it date back to the 13th century, but most of it was built in the 17th. (Http://www.stansguide.co.uk/ greendragon.htm, (August 2007.)

In 1841, the Jenkinsons were living a door away from their son-in-law and daughter, James and Ann Gratton, whose daughter Agnes was born in Church Lane in 1845.

Thomas probably died in the second quarter of 1843. In 1851, Mary, age 68, an "annuitant", was head of her household in Dronfield. (Census, see Mary's notes.) With her was her daughter Emily, 28. Mary seems to have died in the second quarter of 1860. (freebmd.rootsweb.com).

In the 1857 White's 1857 Directory of Derbyshire, the publican of the Green Dragon is "George Jenkinson and asst." (White's 1857 Directory of Derbyshire pages 732-744 at http://www.n.f.wilson.btinternet.co.uk/732-744.htm.)

The Derbyshire Record Office has the account book of a Thomas Jenkinson, a hatter in Dronfield for the years 1834-1846. This is probably our Thomas, since there are no other Thomas Jenkinsons listed as hatters in the directories. Perhaps his son George continued the business and account book after his father's death, until 1846.
