All uncited information about this family is from research done by Nan Gallagher, a great-granddaughter of James and Catherine (Devine) Cunningham through their daughter Ann.
There are no Cunninghams on the Freeholders List of Kilkeel (1820).
Griffith's Valuation
There is a James Cunningham on Griffiths Valuation (1864) in Ballymadeerfy

There is also a James Cunningham in Ballygowan, who is a publican. When James' daughter Ann married (1865), she said she was of Ballygowan, but she also said that her father was a farmer, not a publican.
On the other hand, Ann's first child, Mary, was born in Ballygowan, although the residence of Ann's husband, Ned Rodgers, was stated as Ballymadeerfy.
On the 1901 Cenusus of Kilkeel the Cunninghams include: Patrick (b. 1866) and James (b. 1857) in Ballymadeerfy, and John (b. 1846), William (b. 1849), and Thomas (b. 1848) in Ballygowan.
