Narrative

The Schagers, Schleimers, and Ruppes are all Gottschee German families.

According to Wikipedia, "Gottschee County (German: Graftschaft Gottschee,
Slovene: Kočevsko) refers to the former German speaking region in the Duchy of
Carniola (German: Herzogtum Krain), a crownland of the Habsburg Empire, located
in modern day Slovenia." (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gottschee_County)

The book, Language Contact, German and Slovenian, by Donald F. Reindl,
(images at http://books.google.com/) states:

"The main settlement of German speakers in the Kocevsko (i.e., Kocevje region)
enclave took place between 1349 and 1363, with colonists coming primarily from
Thuringia in present-day central Germany and the adjacent region of Franconia.
... The main settlement of the enclave was the city of Kocevje, while up to 170
smaller villages were scattered throughout the enclave. ... At its greatest, the
German population in Cocevsko numbered approximately 26,000 in the 1870s... "

It was just about this time that members of these families began emigrating to
Cleveland and other cities in the United States.

On his 1900 Census John Schager said he arrived in this country in 1892. He is listed in the early Cleveland City Directories as follows:

1893 Schager John, laborer, residing at 136 Wason
1894 Schager John, stovemntr, residing at 214 Wason
1898 Schager John, stovemntr, residing at 4 Cooper
1899 Schager John, stovemntr, residing at 31 Clifton
1900 Schager John, stovemntr, boarding at 31 Clifton

After 1905, Wason St. was renamed E 38th St. and Clifton became E. 39th. Cooper St. kept its name. 31 Clifton was about 1436 E. 39th. All these addresses are within a few blocks of each other, near Superior Ave and E 39th.

Johann Schager's original arrival at Ellis Island was not found. On Nov 7, 1897 he reentered the US aboard the La Bretagne, which had departed from Havre. He was 40, married, a farmer, and able to read and write. He was Austrian, and his last residence was Rheinthal. His destination was his sister's home in Cleveland, but no address was given. He had a ticket to Cleveland and was carrying $20. He said he had been in the US before, from 1894 to 1897. He was in good health, and had no deformities.
