I didn't find a match in the records for Patrick Kelly. He is not:
* Patrick Kelly, d 1887 Council Bluffs, Iowa. that man was born abt 1841 in Ireland and worked on the railroad
* Patrick Kelly, d Nashville, 15 Sep 1885, that man was single.
* Patrick J Kelley who died Dec 16, 1887. born in Cleveland, age 30, single, d on Huron St Hospital, Ward 1, of typhoid, buried Woodland Catholic. worked at the opera house.
---------
he might be:
Patrick Kelly who died March 31, 1887, at a hospital in Cleveland, of an accident. He was married, age 30y 3m, born in Ireland, laborer, parents Michael and Mary

In the 1886 Cleveland City Directory there is this listing:
Patrick Kelly, catcher, r 2274 Fayette
Fayette became E 76th after 1906, so this was the Rodgers' neighborhood. But in 1887 there was no 2274 Fayette-the numbers ran from 15 to 50, so I couldn't convert the address to the post-1906 address.
-----------
If he was a ball player, he could have died anywhere. There are no records of him living in Cleveland - his son's birth record says Patrick was living at the Rodgers' address, 1784 Broadway, when his son was born, but he is not at that address in the city directory.
A descendant of Mary Rodgers' sister Ann looked through the rosters of the NL and the American Association of Baseball for 1886 and 1887. Also through the Cleveland Blues for the 1880s. She did not find a matching Patrick Kelly. The only Kelly found was pretty famous and did not die until 1920. So he might played in a local amateur league in Cleveland.
