Notes on the family of Joshua and Sarah (Low) Ayers

Joshua Ayers was baptized in Falmouth, Maine, in 1739 and married his

first wife in Wells in 1757, but was "of Phillipstown." He served in

the French and Indian War from 13 Aug 1755 to 12 December 1755 and was

of Phillipstown at the time. The company or regiment and/or book was

"Samuel How, Willard."[26] I need to look at this again.

In 1760 he was `late of Phillipstown now of Penobscot.'[27] He was in

the town of Penobscot, across the river from Fort Point, in 1763. He

sold out there in 1771.[28]

According to a petition that he and Jeremiah Colburn filed in 1776

with the General Court of Massachusetts, Joshua Ayers and Colburn

arrived in the Orono area "five miles above any settlement, where they

thought no person could turn them off" and began building houses and a

saw mill in July 1774. They moved their families there in October of

that year. In May of 1775, they heard reports that the Canadian

Indians might assist Great Britain and come across country and destroy

them so they moved out. One of them returned in August and the other

in June of 1776. (It doesn't say who returned first.)[29]

In 1776 Joshua paid tax of 1 pound, 7 shillings, and 9 pence.[30]

In 1784, when he sold part of the saw mill to Josiah Tolman, Joshua

said he had been there continuously except when he was `driven off by

the Brittons.'[31] His home was either on what was Middle St in 1874,

or in the Myrtle St. area of Orono as of 1957, according to two

different sources.[32]

The Park Holland Survey taken in 1796 found that Joshua was there by

1774 and also included his sons William (settled when?) and Enoch

(1786.)[33]

Joshua is on the 1790 Census of Conduskeeg Plantation with four sons

16 or under, five females, and himself.[34] He and his sons Joshua Jr.

(from his first marriage), William, and Enoch are on the 1800 Census

of Sunkhaze, Hancock Co. All of them said they came from "Hampshire"

when asked "from whence emigrated."

By June 1800 he and his wife were of Passadumkeag and he was of Olamon

[now Greenfield] when he died.[35]
