According to page 6 of Jacob S. Royer's Reminiscences of My Grandmother [Mary Ann Kiel]'s Life, John Stern was 'a well to do salt merchant between Freeport and Tarentum, along the Allegheny river, some 28 miles above Pittsburg.'
