KIEL- Robert F. "Jake," 82, Portage, died Oct. 6, 2006, at Memorial
Medical Center. Born July 29, 1924, in East Conemaugh, son of the late
Harry and Johanna (Busch) Kiel. Preceded in death by wife, Anne (Smardo)
Kiel, who he married on Sept. 16, 1946, and her death on Oct. 10, 1997,
ended their marriage of 51 years; grandchild, Chad Elchin; sisters,
Florence Froggott, Helen Fallecker and Margaret Kiel; and brothers, John
"Edgar," Paul and Thomas.

Robert and Anne's surviving children include: Carol, wife of James
Elchin; Eileen, wife of William Dobrowolsky, both of Portage; Richard,
married to Lisa (Harvey), Pisgah Forest, N.C.; Raymond, married to
Roxana (Ference), Portage; Annette, wife of Dan Illig, Ebensburg; and
Lorraine, at home; also 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Also survived by brother, Walter, married to the former Viola (Smardo).

Member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Portage. Self-employed business
owner of Long's Dairy and previous co-owner of Kiel's Home Hotel, which
he operated with his brother, Thomas.

U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he served as an aviation
mechanic from March 1943 to 1946. He attended Aviation Mechanic School
in Chicago, where he was trained in the Fleet Air Wave 5 Division, and
later served on the Navy Patrol Bombing Squadron. He was a member of the
American Legion Post 430, Portage; Jamestown Rod - Gun Club; Mosquito
Creek Sportsman's Club, Frenchville; Buffalo Run Rod - Gun Club, Manns
Choice; and the VFW.

Bob played as a catcher in the Cambria County Industrial League from
1946 to 1954 for the Legion and Puritan and Bencreek teams. Played semi-
pro football for the Portage Bulldogs. Portage Little League coach for
several years. He was an avid mushroom picker and enjoyed teaching this
craft to his many relatives and friends. He also enjoyed hunting,
fishing and gardening. He valued spending time with all of his children
and grandchildren, as well as daily walks with his beloved dog, Genny.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no viewing. Mass of
Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 509
Caldwell Ave., Portage on Friday at 10 a.m. with Father Walter Moll.
Interment, St. Xavier Cemetery. Alternative Burial Corp. is in charge of
the arrangements.
