David is probably the son of Robert and Laura Edwards, who are in Cambria County in 1860 with a son David, age 17. The Edwardses were from Wales. David worked as a conductor for the railroad and most of his sons worked for the railroad as well.
The transcription of his tombstone at findagrave.com (Oct 2009) calls him Pvt. David H. Edwards.

born Bedford County, May 28, 1843, spent boyhood days there. Served 3 years with company C, 19th Regiment of US regulars.
Came to Altoona in 1865 and has resided here since.
PA Railroad: for a time on the railroad, then in the freight car shop. Retired some 16 years ago. Member of Lieut Pott's post, Number 62, of the GAR, member of the Baptist Church, Union Veteran Legion, Order of Railway Cinductors, and the PA Railroad Relief Association.
Married in Altoona in 1866 to Maria C Hamilton who survives.
