Wilhelm Orschakovski

Birth Name Wilhelm Orschakovski

The spelling variations for this surname are endless. At least some of William's sons seem to have shortened the name to Orschak between the time covered by the 1896 and 1898 City Directories. The varieties of spelling for "Orschak" are only slightly fewer than for the original name.

Gender male
Age at Death about 51 years, 6 months, 7 days

Narrative

There is a baptismal record for an Auguste Orzechowski on 12 Aug 1866 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Strasburg, then part of West Prussia, now Germany. Her parents are named Wilhelm Orzechowski and Heinriette Wysocki.

In addition, Henrietta's sister Christina married a man named August Marquardt, whom a website at ancestry.com said was born in Strasburg, West Prussia. (see his notes.)

Also, Henrietta and Willam once said they were born in Poland, or were Polish, although most of the records said Gemany.

Finally, their son Charles (who changed his name to Clark) married Mathilda Johanna Biastoch. In 1920, her census information said she was born in Germany, as well as both of Charles' parents, , but "Pom" had been crossed out next to all of them. Her Social Security Application says she was born in Stettin Pome, Federal Republic of Germany.

So I think that Wilhelm Orzechowski and Heinriette Wysocki are at least from that area of Germany and if Auguste, baptized 12 Aug 1866, is their daughter, then they are from Strasburg, West Prussia.

Narrative

Some Cleveland City Directories for Orzechowski, Orschak, etc. I don't know if they are all related to William or not.

Events

Event Date Place Description Sources
Birth about December 19, 1841 Prussia, Germany   1a 2a
Event Note

Their 1880 census said that William and Henrietta were born in Prussia.
When their son Edward was born on December 5, 1881, Henrietta and William's place of birth was recorded as Poland.
When a son was born May 4, 1884, the record said Germany.
When their daughter Bertha was born on February 2, 1886, the record said Germany.
Later records, after their death, say it was Germany.

HIs death record said he died at the age of 51 years, 6 months, 7 days.

Immigration June 1873     3a
Event Note

If the reference to the naturalization date of 1881 is correct, then William arrived June 1873. This date would harmonize with the birth years and birth places of his known children. His daughter Henrietta (Minnie)'s information said she was born in Germany, and his son Fred's said he was born in Ohio.

I didn't find any of the family on the immigration records or arrival iists. "Unfortunately, all lists [of Bremen departures] from 1875 - 1908 older than 3 years were destroyed due to lack of space in the Bremen Archives, " according to this site: http://www.passengerlists.de/. But they weren't in the arrivals in New York or Baltimore either. Possibly due to misreading their name, I'm not sure.

[The census taker wrote down "Kaufski" and the record is indexed as Kaufski at familysearch.org. I found it by browsing.]

William Kaufski, 39, laborer, born in Prussia, parents also
Henrietta Kaufski, 39, housekeeper, born in Prussia, parents also
Hermann Kaufski, 12, born in Prussia, parents also
Catherine Kaufski, 9, born in Prussia, parents also
Frederic Kaufski, 6, born in Ohio, parents in Prussia
Charles Kaufski, 3, born in Ohio, parents in Prussia
William Kaufski, 10 months, born in July, born in Ohio, parents in Prussia
Christina Waski, 40, relationship: servant, single, said: born in Ohio, parents in Prussia

Note: I am going to assume that "Catherine" is their daughter Henrietta, or "Minnie". If the census taker can hear "Orshakovski" and write down "Kaufski", then maybe he heard "Minnie" or "Minna" and wrote down "Catherine". Minnie was younger than Herman and older than Frederick, and should be in this household, being born in 1872.

Naturalization July 11, 1881 Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States   3a
Event Note

This might be the index reference to William's naturalization information. The date of arrival is about right. I didn't find the records online, but they might at least provide an address which would identify him, and might provide more information.

Residence December 5, 1881 Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States 34 Berg Street 1a
Event Note

When their son Edward was born Dec 5, 1881, William and Henrietta were living at 34 Berg Street, Cleveland. This became became 803 Berg Avenue SE after the 1906 Cleveland street reorganization. It is no longer there. It sounds like it was near the Central Market at 4th and Bolivar, now where the Quicken Arena is (2015). There son Fred was working at the Sheriff Street Market at 4th and Bolivar in 1918.

Conclusions based on the article "JEWS & JUDAISM" in The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History, at http://ech.case.edu/cgi/article.pl?id=JJ, which mentions Berg Street.
