John O'Rourke

Birth Name John O'Rourke
Gender male

Narrative

This John O'Rourke is the son of Edward Rourke and Rose Fagan. He had a cousin William O'Rourke, son of John Rourke and Ellen Rogers.

Until proven otherwise, I am going to assume that this John O'Rourke accompanied William O'Rourke to the US in 1899. John is not mentioned in his father Edward's will, written 1894, and is not with his siblings in 1901 in Ballintur, but is with them in 1911.

On the passenger manifest, there is a word scribbled next to John's name that looks like cousin. John's information said he was a US citizen, and had been in the US before. Some of these entries in the Cleveland City Directories from 1886 to 1899 could be for John. Note that some of them have a James and John O'Rourke boarding together. James could be John's brother, who was John's destination in 1899.

All were single. All were Roman Catholic, born in Co. Down. Only Edward and John could read and write. The property had 7 buildings on it, beside the residence. (Did this include the buildings for household #1 which Edward owned? There were no buildings listed for that household.) These buildings were: a stable, coach house, cow house, calf house, piggery, fowl house, and barn. Edward's house was a private dwelling, build of stone, brick or concrete, with a tile, slate or iron roof. It had two rooms and two windows in the front of the house. This made it a second class dwelling.
