Samuel Page II

Birth Name Samuel Page II
Gender male
Age at Death about 59 years

Narrative

Samuel II is the son of one of the four sons of Joseph Page, the first Page in the Orono to Bangor area. He is not the son of Stephen Page, since Stephen's son Samuel is accounted for. He is probably not the son of James Page, since James' household in 1820 has no sons in it. He could be the son of Isaac Page. The town records of Eddington might have information on Isaac's family. Samuel could also be the son of Joseph Page. He did name his first son Joseph, and not Isaac or James.

Notes on the family of Samuel II and Judith (Dudley) Page

Regarding their marriage record: Orono's vital records for the years 1826 to 1836 are a copy made from those in Old Town, which was set off from Orono and incorporated in 1840. Orono thought the records were lost in a fire, but later found that Old Town had the information. [Perhaps when the towns split, they made a copy of all the records. Then later there was a fire in Orono which destroyed the records for the years 1826 to 1836. They thought they were lost forever but then realized Old Town had a copy as well. Then they copied Old Town's so that Orono's were complete.]

Why does this matter? Samuel II and Judith/Julia were married in 1831, within this time frame.

I have looked at the microfilm of Old Town's records and transcribed
the record as follows:

30 Aug 1830 Intention Saml Page, 2d
Julia Dudley, both of Orono

(Source: Town Records of Old Town, Maine. Microfilm at New England Historic and
Genealogical Society. Section 2. Births, Deaths, Marriages and Misc. Town Records, 1827 - 1839
Marriages p. 201.)

The groom's first name is very hard to make out. The ink and the page are about the same color, due to fading or filming. It could be "Saml" but you could mistake it for "James". However, there is no known James Page II in the area, but there is a Samuel Page II on the censuses.

I am not alone in transcribing it this way. Ruth Gray transcribed it as Samuel also:

Page, Samuel, 2nd & Juely Dudley
int 3 Aug 1830 (B 207)

(Source: Ruth Gray, Editor, Vital Records of Old Town, Maine, prior to 1892,
(Camden, Maine: Picton Press, 1996.)

The microfilm copy of the record which Orono has says, on page 363:

363 30 Aug 1830 Intention James Page, 2d
363 Judy Dudley, both of Orono

(Source: Microfilm Records from Orono, Maine, at New England Historic and Genealogical Society
Section 1, Orono Book, 1806 - 1838)

But as mentioned above, these records were copied from Old Town's. At the beginning of Section 1, there is a note which says: "December 1826 to 1836, 213 records thought to have been destroyed by fire, but found in Old Town records, continue on page 357."

And on page 355 they say: "This is a copy of records of the town of Orono from the year 1826
to the year 1836, said records being now in the possession of the town of Old Town. A true copy of the record. attest. M.C. Marsh, Town Clerk."

I believe that Old Town's record should be relied upon, since it is either the original record itself
or the first copy made from the originals, some of which were destroyed by the fire. Orono's version is either a copy of the original, or a copy of a copy.

Samuel is identified as the parents of Joseph Page, the railroad engineer who married Abby Dudley and lived in Orono and Bangor for these reasons: Joseph's age matches that of Samuel's son Joseph. Joseph and Abby Page named a daughter Eunice as did Samuel II and Judith. Joseph and Abby were living in Veazie P.O., Orono, in 1860, as were Samuel II and Judith. After Abby died, Joseph's second marriage record said his father's name was Samuel. There are no other Joseph Pages on the census records or available vital records whose age and information match the railroad engineer's.

The only other Samuel Page in Orono is never listed with a son named Joseph. In fact, he has a daughter Mary A. the same age as the Joseph in this family, making it difficult, unless they were twins. However, on the 1840 Census, this other Samuel is listed with only one son, who is between five and ten years old. This young man's name was Charles, age 17, in 1850. (See the group for the other Samuel Page family for sources.)

Also, in 1848 or 1849 Samuel Page II and a Joseph Page purchased for $100 from Nathaniel Treat of Orono a parcel of land in Orono beginning at the southeast corner of Lot #66. (Penobscot County Land Records, Volume 198, Page 527). I have 6 July 1848 for the date of the deed and 1 Oct 1849 for the date it was recorded.

I have looked at the microfilm of Old Town's records and transcribed the record as follows from page 207 of the original Old Town records:

30 Aug 1830 Intention Saml Page, 2d Julia Dudley, both of Orono

Orono's vital records for the years 1826 to 1836 are a copy made from those in Old Town, which was set off from Orono and incorporated in 1840. Orono thought the records were lost in a fire, but later found that Old Town had the information.

Orono's own records for this time period were a later copy of Old Town's. Their copy was faded and could be read as James or Samuel.

The microfilm copy of the record which Orono has says, on page 363:
30 Aug 1830 Intention James Page, 2d Judy Dudley, both of Orono

However there is no James Page 2d to be found in Orono, and Judith is on the later censuses with Samuel 2nd, not with a James.
