Narrative
On the 1850 Census in Orono, Maine, there is a household headed
by a Samuel Page 2nd, whose wife is Julia (Judith in 1870). They
have a daughter Eunice, and a son Joseph age 19, who is likely
this Joseph Page.[27] See Samuel's file.
When they were married in Bangor in 1854, Joseph was living in
Orono and Abby was living in Bangor. Joseph and Abigail were first
cousins. Joseph' mother Julia/Judith was the sister of Abigail's
father John H. Dudley.
In 1860 Joseph and Abby were living in the Veazie Post Office area of Orono with two children, Stover O., age 5, and Mary E., age 2. Joseph owned his own farm, which was valued at $150. Mary E. is one of the two children that was not living in 1900, as stated by Abby on the 1900 census. Their third child, Eunice, was born in 1860, probably in Orono, and died in 1867. She is buried in Bangor. Their fourth child, Charles was born in Bangor in 1866.
I have not yet found Joseph and Abby Page on the 1870 Census. The Joseph Page on the agrigultural report was born about 1817. His wife's name was Thankful, and his children were Andrew 8, Jennie 4, and Augusta 2. (based on the order of households on the regular census report.)
In Bangor, Joseph Page owned a house on Market Street at first, but moved to Fruit
Street by 1873 or 1874. On the 1880 Census they were listed in the seventh ward of Bangor with their two youngest children, Charles V., age 14, and Joseph P., age 11. (In 1880 their son Oscar and his family were the next household on the census after
Joseph and Abby.)
During this time Joseph worked as a railroad engineer. In the
Bangor City Directories for the years 1871-1876 his employer is
called the C.E.& N.A.R. From 1878 to 1882 it was the European and
North American Railway Co.[28] After 1884 he was working for the
Maine Central Railroad.[29]
In the 1897 Bangor City Directory Joseph and Abby lived at 29
Fruit Street and were still there in 1900.[30] In 1897 he was an
engineer but by 1899 he was a watchman. Joseph was at least 65
by this time.
In the 1897 directory there is a Percival Page, carpenter at 19
Fruit Street, and in 1899 he is at 29 Fruit Street. This is
Joseph's son, Joseph P. In 1900, Joseph and Abby's
granddaughter Doris Mabel, Charles' daughter, was living with
them.
Abby died in November 1900 (of general paralysis) and is buried
in Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
Joseph remarried in 1903 to Carrie Baker Emery. It was the
second marriage for both. They were living in Ward Two of Bangor
in 1910. Joseph died in 1913 of nephritis, at the "E.M. Gen. H."
which is probably the Eastern Maine General Hospital. He is
buried with his first wife wife Abby.

[Martha McPheters is listed as if head of this household based on the first two columns which record house number and family number. But it could be a mistake. She probably was in the previous household, that of John McPhetres, 2nd, and Matilda (Page) McPhetres.] That would leave Samuel Page 2nd as head of this household. |
