Narrative

There is the following birth record:

Mary Josephine Crimm, born Mar 5, 1883, at 170 Everett St., East Boston, daughter of James A, laborer born in Boston, and Catherine born in England.

This date doesn't match the one on her Social Security death index record, but this is likely her. The Jenkins were listed at 172 Everett St., E. Boston, in the 1872 and 1874 Boston City Directory. There is a marriage record for her parents using the names James Crimm and Catherine Carrigan.

There is a SSDI record whose SS# matched the one on her death record. It gives a birth date of 30 Jul 1883. But the Mary E. Jenkins born on that date was born at 120 South Street, Boston, to a James J. Jenkins and both her parents were born in Ireland. Also there is a death record for a Mary E. Jenkins dying on 26 Oct 1884 at 13 Oxford St, Boston, daughter of James J. This is the same neighborhood, now Chinatown, and is not East Boston.

I think when Mary went to apply for a Social Security number she needed a birth certificate. She then applied for the birth certificate using the name Jenkins, not Crimm, and by mistake the city sent her the one for the Mary E Jenkins that died. If she had used the name Crimm she would have got the right birth record.

Mary J. Jenkins remained single and lived with the family until she died. She was a candy dipper in a candy factory on the 1910 to 1930 Censuses and was described as a forelady, retired, on her death record. She died at Viking Nursing Home in Winthrop and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. She was listed on the SSDI.
