[in Chatteris:] A serious fire which broke out on Mr. Billips's farm on
14 September 1864 caused the death of a 7-year-old girl and the
destruction of upwards of 100 houses. The total damage was over £10,000,
and a relief fund of £300 was subscribed for the sufferers. The fire was
said to be the work of an incendiary. (fn. 15) An earlier fire (1706)
caused £1,787 worth of damage. (fn. 16)

fn. 15 The Times, 16, 19, 27 Sept. 1864. Between April and August of
this year the rainfall fell below the average by 39 per cent., and
serious fires also occurred at Billinghay (Lincs.) and Thaxted (Essex).
Chatteris is one of the few places in England which have experienced
fewer than 100 rain days in a year (93 in 1921) (A. B. Tinn, This
Weather of Ours (1946)).
