James Gratton was at the Green Dragon in mid 1841, when a Sale of Dronfield, Derbyshire property was held at the house of Mr Gratton, the Green Dragon, Dronfield.

LOCAL NEWS.

Narrow Escape.—On Thursday, Mr. White and Mr. Gratton, of Dronfield, were coming in a gig, from the Swan Inn, there, to Chesterfield. Having started without a breech-band to the harness, in driving down the hill near Dronfield, the splash board fell upon the horse’s legs, and off he started at a fearfull pace. Mr. White asked Mr. Gratton to take hold of one of the reins, and they would be able to stop him going up the next hill, but he replied, 'nay, nay, lad, I'll drop.' We are sorry to say in dropping he received a violent sprain in the wrist, and was otherwise seriously injured.

James Grattan, of Dronfield, charged James Allen with an assault. The complainant is the landlord of the Green Dragon, Dronfield, and on Monday, the 4th of September, a match at cricket came off between a party from Sheffield against an equal number of the Dronfield club. After the game had terminated, the parties appeared to have adjourned to the house of the complainant, and there made merry together. ...

Summary:-
The men from Sheffield had departed in the evening, but the men of Dronfield remained to celebrate their victory and still there when morning broke. A quarrel then arose and the landlord tried to clear his house. The defendant resisted and struck the landlord over the eye and the defendant's clothes got torn. It was also noted that the Landlord had allowed his premises to remain open at untimely hours "contrary to the tenor of his License". Mr Bagshawe dismissed the case and ordered the parties to divide the costs.

Derbyshire Courier, November 13, 1886

An old Dronfield Liberal has just gone to that place where oppositions
cease from troubling, and politicians are at rest. Jame Grattan, locally
known as the Mayor of Dronfield, probably from the interest he took in the
sittings of the local magistrates which he attended with greater regularity
than any of the J.P's upon the Bench, died on Friday. Many years ago he was
landlord of the Green Dragon Inn in that town. He was an enthusiastic
Liberal and a firm believer in Mr. Gladstone and all his works, and was a
familiar and prominent figure in all the demonstrations of the party which
have taken place any time during the past half century. His advocacy of
Liberalism was chiefly confined to narrating the stirring events which
occurred during the first elections in the Division, and he was never so
happy as when fighting his battle o'er again, in relating his exploits in
connection with the agitation for the repeal of the Corn Laws. He took a
gossiping interest in all local affairs, and his constant inquiry was if
there was anything going off. At last he has gone off at the advanced age
of 76.
