Narrative
todo: Who were Dennis and Mary Carrigan in James' household in 1861 in Preston Lancashire?
Both of James Carrigan's parents and both of Elizabeth Bracken's parents were born in Ireland. On the 1930 census, two of their daughters said that both their parents were born in Northern Ireland. (This was the first United States census on which the distinction could be made.)
Whether or not James and Elizabeth met in Ireland is not certain at present. There were Carrigans, Brackens, and Gleason/Gleesons in the border area of County Fermanagh and County Cavan in that time period. Fermanagh is in Northern Ireland.
The births of their children Catherine, Margaret, and John are indexed online at freebmd.com, in Preston, Lancashire.
James Carrigan arrived in the United States in 1865 and was a naturalized citizen. He earned a living selling fish. His occupation was described as "fish dealer" in 1865, "huckster" in 1880, "fish" in 1890, and "fish pedlar" in 1900. He could not read or write, according to the 1900 Census, but he had not been unemployed at any time in the previous year.
The family lived in East Boston. In the 1865 City Directory they were at 42 Porter St and in the same year also at 116 Everett Street (Source?). In 1880 they were in the rear of 245 Summer Street, in 1885, 1887 and 1890 at 132 Everett Street, and in 1900 and 1903 at 10 Bremen Street. Their daughter Mary was at 10 Bremen St. in 1905.

from: "My understanding of the rateable poll was a predetermined tax levied on a property owner and an occupier of a dwelling who was over a certain age. Once they paid this tax, then they were allowed to vote, but not until then. I think it was based on British Law. The rateable poll was repealed in the 20th Century because it was disproportionate between rich and poor." |
