Narrative

Margaretta Craig was educated at Wooster College, Ohio, and Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing, Baltimore, MD. Her first mission service on behalf of the Presbyterian Church's Commission on Ecumenical Mission and Relations was as a summer volunteer nurse at Battle Harbor Hospital, Labrador. In 1930 she was assigned to the Miraj Hospital in western India, where she becme supervising nurse in 1937.

In 1943 she organized a course of training in nursing administration for military nurses for the government of India, and from 1946 to 1958 she helped establish and served as principal of the government's College of Nursing, University of Delhi.

In the Supplement to the London Gazette, 1 January 1948, pp 25, 26, the following text appeared:

From 1959 to at least 1963 she was head of nursing services at Ludhiana Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, India. On Sunday November 10, 1963, she spoke about her work there at services at the Christ Presbyterian Church in Lebanon, PA. (Source: Lebanon Daily News article.)

Margaretta joint authored a book entitled Elements Of Psychology & Mental Hygiene For Nurses in India with B.D. Bhatia.

The original introduction to the book says in part:
"This book, the first to be written in India on Psychology and Mental Hygiene for Nurses, will be welcomed by nursing teachers and students alike. Both authors are eminently fitted for their task. Miss Margaretta Craig has been associated with nursing in India for more than twenty years and, as Principal of a Nursing College ... she has a deep insight in the day-to-day problems of nurses." -- TK Adranvala, Former Nursing Adviser, Government of India, 21 May 1938.

The book was reissued in 2005 by Orient Blackswan which said about it "This Classic Textbook For Nurses Has Been Reissued In A Larger Format, With An Attractive New Look To Enhance Readability And Comprehension.
