"Jonathan Billups was born in a village in Cambridgeshire in 1824. From a poor background he fought his way up to a prosperous position. He became a Railway Contractor who had great ability and talent. Although it has been said that Mr Billups wanted to make a fortune - he failed. His skill and trustworthiness had enabled him to make money - his unwise speculation ensured its loss quite as rapidly as it was made.

Thirty- three years prior to his death in Bristol in December 1896, he and his wife had met General Booth and his wife at the close of the 1st Salvation Army Campaign in Cardiff and from that day they were to be friends forever. Mr Billups was a true admirer and a staunch friend of the Salvation Army - he loved soul saving. He has been described as a lover of God and souls'.

The lives of the two families then ran very much side by side."

In 1878 Jonathan and his wife were in Sweden to build the Halmstad - Nässjö railway line. They were visited there by Bramwell Booth, son of William. (From an article about Hanna Ouchterlony at http://www.sawiki.net/.)
----------------
From The life of General William Booth: the founder of the Salvation army, Volume 1 By Harold Begbie (New York: The Macmillan Co., 1920), at books.google.com:

'William Booth moved to Cardiff in Feb 1863' ... "Here too the Booths made the acquaintance of Mr. and Mrs. Billups, also generous people, who showed the greatest sympathy in their work and became ... their life-long friends."

----------------
From The War Cry, Dec 5, 1896 [.pdf file provided by English Billups researchers.]
Address given by General Booth at Mr J E Billups’ (1824-1896) memorial service. MR BILLUPS, OF CARDIFF, GONE HOME, Thirty three years of friendship interrupted for a season, A PERSONAL MEMORY, By THE GENERAL ... Mr Billups is gone. All round the world Officers will hear the tidings with regret. The Salvation Army has lost a real genuine friend.

-----------------
Apparently Jonathan remarried after the death of his first wife Susanna. The War Cry account of his funeral talk goes on to say: "GOD WILL BE WITH US. May he comfort and bless the Widow who is left to mourn his departure." Jonathan was on the 1891 census with an Ann Billups, born about 1828 in Kent, England.
