Narrative
Look again at Adam and Margaret Steinbach of York, PA as possible parents of Margaret Steinbach.
The spelling of Margaret's maiden name as "Steinbaugh" comes from an entry in the family Bible of her daughter Sarah. It was probably Anglicized by the Scots-Irish from Steinbach, or something similar. I have decided to stick with "Steinbach."
In 1880, two of her children said she was born in Pennsylvania, but two said Maryland. There were Steinbachs (various spellings) in Maryland in 1790. Perhaps her family came from Maryland to Pennsylvania.
Jacob S. Royer's Reminiscences of Mary Ann Kiel says that Margaret "descended from German ancestors about two generations back." Also that "Her mother died when she was only nine years old, and she had to raise her younger sister and a mere baby."
Margaret (Steinbaugh) Kern was living with her daughter Eleanor (Kern) Hunt in Conemaugh Township in 1850. (Source: 1850 Census, Conemaugh Township, Cambria Co., PA, Series M432, Roll 761, Page 113B, transcribed at www.rootsweb.com/~pacambri.)
