Sarah Kern

Birth Name Sarah Kern
Gender female
Age at Death between 59 years and 62 years, 11 months, 30 days

Narrative

Elizabeth Wicks' research says that Sarah was born 13 Dec 1804 in York, Pennsylvania, but she doesn't identify her source for the information.

Sarah's daughter Celia (Kiel) Clossin's death record, Pittsburgh, Jan 6, 1929, says that Sarah was born in York, Pennsylvania.

Sarah (Kern) Kiel is on the 1850 Census in Greensburg with D. Morris and her four youngest daughters. (1850 Federal Census, Greenburg Boro., Westmoreland Co., PA Series M432, Roll 837, page 183. Census page 183, line 10.)

In 1850 "Sarah Kiehl" was exonerated from paying 2 cents in county taxes and 3 cents in state taxes, while living in Greensburg Borough, Westmoreland Co. ("Exonerations of County, State, and Militia Taxes, Westmoreland County, 1850" as found in Volume 8, Number 4 (Feb 1989) of The Old Westmoreland.)

Sometime between 1850 and 1858 Sarah moved to Wilmore, where she appears on the 1860 Census with Morris and the three youngest daughters. (1860 Federal Census, Wilmore Boro, Cambria County, Pennsylvania Series M653, Roll 1088, Page 588)

She may have moved by 1853, since a rootsweb source says that Sarah's daughter Mary Ann Snider was living in Greensburg in 1851 at the birth of her second child, and in Kernville, Cambria Co., in August 1853 at the birth of her third (Jespat.ged file from Jesse Davis' database at rootsweb.com). Or she may have moved by 1856, when her mother, Margaret Steinbaugh died in Johnstown at the home of Sarah's brother George W. Kern. (Photocopy of Margaret's death notice, The Cambria Tribune, Wednesday 23 Apr 1856)

The obituary of Sarah's daughter Emma (Kiel) Spielman says that Emma lived in Cambria County for 30 years. It was not quite this long, since Sarah and the daughters were in Greensburg in 1850, but it does indicate a move closer to 1850 than to 1860. Emma married in 1875 and moved to Pittsburgh in 1879.

Sarah died between 1864, when she was alive as a legatee of her father's estate, and 1867, when Jacob acted as her heir in a suit regarding the same estate. (Frank Kiel's Hendrik Gerrit Kiel, p. 43 and footnote 76.)She probably died in Cambria County. The date of death and her burial place are not known. However, Eleanor Wicks' notes say that she died at Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. If so, she was probably with her daughter Mary Ann (Kiel) Snyder.

Note: Della Reagan Fischer's Marriage and Death Notices from Weekly Newspapers, 1818 - 1865, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Volume 1 (McKeesport, Penna., typescript, 1963), page 39, refers to th e marriage notice in the Greensburg Gazette, but omits the date of the notice and is in error regarding the marriage date. Agnes Campbell Tomichek's Marriage and Death Notices from Newspapers 1808-19 21, Westmoreland County (Greensburg, PA: Westmoreland County Historical Society, 1988), page 42, also refers to the Gazette notice, and says it appeared in the July 2, 1824 edition. The Gazette seem s to be the source of the error regarding the date of the marriage, because Tomichek also refers to a notice in the Westmoreland Republican of the same day which gives the correct date, Thursday Jun e 24, 1824 .
