Narrative

Henry's middle name comes from Eleanor Wicks' research. She also says that they were married in Greensburg on 18 Oct 1843, but I didn't find that inthe Newspaper excerpts in Mains' book.

Henry R. Kern is not on Della Reagan Fischer's transcription of the Births - Baptisms at the First Lutheran Church in Greensburg, even though his sisters born before and after him are on her list.

Henry R. Kern became a Methodist minister June 4, 1838. He served the Monongahela and/or Chartiers circuit of the Pittsburgh Conference in 1839 and 1840. (Church Records of the Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church, at http://umchurchrecords.org/.)

On October 30, 1842, he officiated at the marriage of his niece Margaret Kiel to Thomas Young in Greensburg. (Recorded in family Bible of Henry and Sarah Kiel.)

He then served in Arkansas where he was married. Health reasons caused him to move back to Pennsylvania. (Photocopy of "Memoir of H. R. Kern" from the Johnstown Tribune Friday July 19, 1872, received from Cambria County Library.)

He served the Somerset Circuit in 1845 to 1847 and the West Newton Circuit in 1847 and 1848.(Church Records, as above.)

Henry was one of the executors of his father's will in 1846, along with his brother George W. and his brother-in-law, Samuel L. Gorgas. He also received an equal share in the estate. (Will of Joseph Kern found at: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ pa/westmoreland/wills/kernj.txt. File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Linda Bischoff, lkbischoff@mchsi.co m. Henry later moved to Steubenville, Ohio, (where he became a dentist) and later lived in Pulaski, Tennessee. When the Civil War began, he left Tennessee, stopped in Indiana to visit friends, and then settled in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, in August 1861. He remained in Iowa until he died. ("Memoir of H. R. Kern")
