Narrative
Oscar Stover Page was born about 26 September 1854, in Orono, Maine. His father was a farmer there in 1860, when Oscar was six years old.
By at least the time of the 1873/1874 Bangor City Directory, Stover went by his middle name of Oscar. In that year he owned a fruit and confectionery store at 67 Hammond St., Bangor, and lived at 3 Fruit Street, the same address as his parents.
In 1875/1876 he ran a business called Page's Liniments, for which there was an ad on page five of the city directory. In 1879/1880 he no longer owned a business. He and his family were living at the same address as his parents. They were in Bangor until the time covered by the 1884 City Directory. Oscar was then working as a fireman, presumably for the railroad, and owned a house at "5 Emerson block, Barker."
In May of 1883 their son William was born in Portland, Maine. In the 1884 Portland Directory there are these listings:
Page Oscar S., engineer, h 50 Waterville
Page Oscar F., teamster, 353 Coml., h. 50 Waterville (duplicate?)
Page Ellen M., Mrs, dressmaker, 50 Waterville
Page Julia A. Mrs, h. 39 Waterville
[Julia Page may be the daughter of Nathaniel and Eunice Merrill, born 6 Sep 1823 in Portland, and who married William S C Page on 8 May 1845 in Portland.]
From at least 1886 until about 1905 the Oscar Page family lived in East Boston. When Augustus was born in 1886 they were at 1 Percival Place. Their son Stover (Fred S.) was born at 170 Putnam St. in April 1893. In 1900 they were at 104 Brooks St. In 1902 they were probably at 144 Webster Street, since their daughter Abbie says she was "at home" at that address on her (second) marriage record.
Their grandson Augustus Ezra was born in either East Boston or
Maine in 1905 and their son William was living in Bangor in 1905
when he was married. Oscar, William, Joseph O. and Augustus are
all listed in the 1907 Bangor City Directory at 365 Broadway. In
1909 Oscar, William, and Joseph O. are at 60 Brimmer St. in
Brewer, At the time of the 1910 census, Oscar and family,
including sons William and Augustus are living on Brimmer St.,
Brewer.
Oscar and Martha were divorced 22 Apr 1911.[34] When Fred S.
marries in September 1911, he says that his father is residing in
Brewer but his mother is in Bangor. In 1912, Oscar was boarding
with his son William at 46 Chamberlain St, Brewer. (Brewer City
Directory). If William and his family continued to live with
Oscar, then Oscar was still in Brewer in 1913 when William's son
Jerome was born, and in Bangor in 1915 when William's son Willis
Charles was born. Oscar is listed in the 1919 Bangor City
Directory at 238 Parkview Ave. (By November of that year, William
was back in East Boston, see his file.)
On the 1920 census Oscar is living in Bangor, with two of Fred
S.'s children in his household. Oscar is listed in the 1923/24
Bangor City Directory at 17 Fruit St. His son Frederick was at 16
Fruit St.
Oscar died at
21 Orient Avenue, Melrose, MA, in 1943, at the home of his son
Augustus. His death record said he had been a resident of that
city for three years or more. The death notice of Augustus two
years later mentions a former pastor from Woburn, so both of them
might have lived there for a while. Oscar is buried in Wyoming
Cemetery, Melrose.
There is an Oscar E. Page who died in 1939 who lived in Melrose and is also
buried in Wyoming Cemetery. He doesn't seem to be a close relative. He was born
in Massachusetts, as was his father Charles A. Page. Charles' father George A.
Page was born about 1815 in Hallowell, Maine, near Augusta.(Sources: Censuses of
Melrose and Boston, image of George A. Page's death record at
NewEnglandAncestors.org)
On the 1880 census Oscar was described as a laborer, but this
sometimes included more highly skilled jobs. In 1884 in the
Bangor directory he was listed as a fireman, presumably for the
railroad. From at least 1900 onward he worked as a fireman on a
steam locomotive. On the 1920 census, age 65, this was his
occupation, although he may have been retired. His father had
been an railroad engineer, and his brother Joseph P. Page was a
fireman in 1910. His sons William and Fred S. also worked on the
railroad at various times.

Census in Massachusetts at ancestry.com and did not find him. Need to
look again in Maine.
