Daniel Morris Kiel
Birth Name | Daniel Morris Kiel |
Gender | male |
Age at Death | 87 years, 1 month, 27 days |
Narrative
Daniel seems to have gone by his middle name Morris throughout his life.
On the 1850 Census, D. Morris Kiehl, is living in his mother's household in Greensburg. His occupation is "jailor." (See his parents' files.) In the 1850's Daniel and his brother Jacob operated the first livery stable in Johnstown. He also worked as a grocer. (Kiel book, no source given.)
On 2 Apr 1861 Daniel Morris became the postmaster of Wilmore, and served as such until he was succeeded by James D. Hamilton on 26 Sep 1864. (Kiel book citing National Archives, Record of Appointment of Postmasters 1832 to Sept. 30, 1971.) Note: James Hamilton was the future father-in-law of Daniel Morris' sister Elizabeth E. ("Eckie") Kiel Hamilton.
A descendant of his sister Eckie has a sheet of paper that was inside the family Bible with a list of names on it. The names include:
Morris Kiel, Postmaster April __, 1864
G. W. Kern & Bro.
In 1863 Daniel served as a Corporal in Company B, Independent Battalion, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. (Transcribed list at Cambria County website, at /www.rootsweb.com/ ~pacambri/military/indep/b.html, their souce: Bates, Samuel P., History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-5, Harrisburg: B. Singerly, State Printer. 1871).
In 1864 and 1865 he was a private in the Pennsylvania Volunteer Heavy Artillery. Frank Kiel's book (page 46) calls it Captain Lowman's Company, 5th Regiment. His source is the military record of Daniel Morris Kiel in the National Archives (filed as Keil, Morris).
The website,www.rootsweb.com/ ~pacambri/military/204th/d.html calls it Company D, 204th Regiment, 5th Heavy Artillery. Their source was Bates' History. Perhaps it went by both names or it refers to two tours of duty in the two years.
He is on Plaque 5 of the Ebensburg War Memorial as Corporal Daniel H. Kiel.
Transcribed at /www.rootsweb.com/~pacambri/military/ewm/ewmp05.html.
There are many of his letters home in the Kiel book, pages 49 to 57.
At the time of his marriage in 1864 both Daniel Morris and Susan A. Brady were "of Summerhill." (Lost source.)
There is much more information on Daniel Morris' life and his descendants in Frank Wilson Kiel, Hendrik Gerrit Kiel: Dutch Immigrant to Pennsylvania, A Genealogy (Comfort, Texas: Skyline Ranch Press, 2000).
