Elizabeth Extine Kiel

Birth Name Elizabeth Extine Kiel
Gender female
Age at Death 86 years, 5 months, 21 days

Narrative

Elizabeth Eckstein Kiel was named after her paternal grandmother, Elisabeth Ecksteen. The actual spelling of her middle name varies over time with the records. She lived well into the lifetimes of her grandsons who remembered her well. She is said to have preserved her parents' Bible through the 1889 Johnstown flood and also had pictures believed to be of her husband and mother.

In August 1890, Eckie wrote from Pittsburgh to her brother Daniel Morris Kiel about Joseph talking to the pension agent about Daniel Morris' pension. See Daniel's notes for the letter. (Frank Wilson Kiel, HendrikGerrit Kiel -- Dutch Immigrant to Pennsylvania, Comfort, Texas: Skyline Ranch Press, 2000, p. 66.)

After her husband Joseph's death, Eckie remained in Pittsburgh with her sons and is usually listed in the City Directories in the same household or in the next household to one or more of them.

Eckie filed a widow's application for Joseph's pension on 23 Apr 1898. (Source: Pension application of Elizabeth E. Hamilton. Widow's application number 675,298, certificate number 468 343, Pennsylvania. Digitized image at ancestry.com.)

There is a section on the pension record cards for transfers of payments and remarks. One of Eckie's pension record cards has a remark in that section with the address "55 Woodlawn Ave, Toronto, Ontario". There is a date in the same section that says Jan 29, 1917. I don't know if the date goes with the address or not. Eckie's sister Margaret was at that address on the 1911 Census. The card is at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K6CH-P99.

So far, I looked for Eckie's death notice in the Pittsburgh Press for 1931 from Jan 1 to July 31 and did not find her. But a lot of the pages are faded, and some of the issues are not available. The index online for Allegheny County deaths did not find her in 1931 at all. If there was a death notice, it might be in one of the issues that is not available or readable.

Events

Event Date Place Description Sources
Birth March 2, 1845 Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States   1a
Event Note

Eckie's death record, with her son James as informant, says she was born May 2, 1845, not March 2. But her parents' family Bible pretty clearly says "March", since it is written out, not abbreviated. On the other hand, the Bible record may have been recorded some time after the fact and be in error.

In the 1889 Johnstown City Directory Joseph is listed as running a boarding house at 136 Jack[son] St. There were eleven boarders before the flood. There was no report regarding survivors or casualties from that address after the flood. Elsewhere in the directory are three other men listed at that address. One was noted as "unaccounted for."

1889 Johnstown City Directory:
HAMILTON JOSEPH, boarding house, 136 Jack[son] st, r h do. 11.

"r h do" means "rents house, ditto, (at same address)". "11" is the number of people at the address, before the flood. The lack of another
number after 11, e.g. 11-11, means there was no report from that address after the flood.

Event Note

Eckie (Kiel) Hamilton was living with her son James M Hamilton at 102 Seel Street when she died. James said it was in Etna; the person who filled out the death record said it was in Shaler Township, which looks like the more precise location to me.

She might have been living there by May 31, 1931, since the doctor's statement on the death record said he had attended to her from that date onward, and his address is in Etna, not Pittsburgh.
